This project was developed as a response to a design competition organised by Affect, entitled 'Surplus and Creativity - Design and the Readymade'.
Coffee culture within Wellington is prolific, and DIY is an integral part of wider kiwi culture. With this in mind, I wanted to combine these elements within a piece of furniture. Inspired by sacks of coffee beans in a favourite café, the intention was to replicate their full, yet sagging nature in a seat with legs.
This aesthetic was achieved by draping the sack over a standard saw horse from a local DIY store. The saw horse was trimmed to remove excess timber. Recycled polystyrene bead was sourced from a local land fill site, preventing the polystyrene from entering landfill, and re-using it within the consumer cycle, which is preferable for the environment, and adds an extra dimension to the project.
The feet of the bench are finished in a coffee coloured urethane. This gives the feet a soft, non-slip foot, whilst referencing coffee spills and stains.
A short, tongue-in-cheek project that aims to enlighten and amuse.
